Residential hedge in Los Angeles

Owner wanted Phyllostachys bambusoides (Japanese timber bamboo) screen around pool in rear yard to hide surrounding buildings.  We took out existing plants, installed concrete and heavy plastic rhizome barriers in the small areas available for planting and installed plants.  Existing pop-up watering sprinklers were kept.

Existing garden in 2003.        Existing plants removed.

New bamboo being installed in rear garden.

Planter on side of house.

In late 2004 owner complained plants were not growing fast enough.  We checked out his watering system and found it had been reset to provide only a few minutes of water per day to the bamboo.  We changed the watering schedule to turn on twice a day for 20 minutes each time.  Also we filled in some gaps with more plants, trimmed the plants and gave them some fertilizer.
