Residence in Los Angeles
A landscape architect placed a hedge of semiarundinaria fastuosa at the rear of this house in 1990 and, since the popular belief among all 'experts' at that time was that a 2-3' barrier would confine a running bamboo - that sort of barrier was installed. It was an expensive heavy weight plastic barrier designed to stop tree roots. In 1998 a few shoots began to shoot up outside the barrier, which the owner chopped down. Every year the number of new shoots increased until 2001, when they began to pop up in the neighbor's yard. In 1993 we went in and dug the plants out.
