Orange County Performing Arts Center Garage

The courtyard  in the center of this 5-level high garage is open to the sky.  In August the plants receive 300 foot-candles during the day, with 9000 foot-candles for one hour at noon.  In the winter the plants receive no direct sunlight, only indirect light from the open sky above.  In 1988 we installed a lot of Bambusa vulgaris vittata at the request of Henry Segerstrom and his wife, but sometime in the 90s someone changed the design and took out a lot of the 30-40' tall plants, leaving just a few medium-size canes which are kept only around 20' tall by pruning.
