Office/Residence by celebrated architect Rudolph Schindler

It's amazing that the bamboo in this project was specified by the architect and installed as part of the original project in 1921!  He picked the right plants and placed them in the right place.  The only thing he did which was questionable was installing golden bamboo without rhizome barriers, forcing the people who maintain the property to control the running hedges by mowing down the new shoots from the wandering rhizomes several times a year for the last 80+ years!

Bambusa oldhamii (Tropical Timber Bamboo) - Notice how massive the root systems have become.

Phyllostachys aurea (Golden bamboo) hedges - no rhizome barriers!  (but a lot of mowing)
