- BAMBUSA TULDOIDES
-

Probable height in Southern California within 3 years = 30'
Probable ultimate height in Southern California = 50'
Height in habitat = 55'
Loses leaves around 15 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
Loses canes around 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit.
Dies around 0 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
If growing in the ground it prefers to grow in full sun.
A clumping bamboo - rhizomes will not run sideways.
Minimum soil depth required for a healthy plant = 1'
Unrestrained rhizome depth in moist soil = 2'
2" maximum
diameter culms. Vigorous & prolific clumper with 1/2" x 8" dark
green mature leaves on erect, straight culms used in China for many industrial
purposes, including scaffolding, farm construction & pushing junks through
the rivers. Paul But in Hong Kong says shavings from inside the culm are
used for treating fevers & infantile epilepsy. Potentially a good
large hedge plant, the culms are usually spaced somewhat further apart than
Oldhami, especially on young plants, giving a more open & transparent feeling
if the hedge is kept 3-5' wide. Culms are said to be more tightly packed
in the clump & skinnier than Tulda. The major problem with this plant
is its horizontal branches. Some people plant it in an inaccessible spot
at the back of the border or edge of the property & it becomes a solid interlocking
wall of canes pointing in all directions which are somewhat difficult to remove.
Jean Harrington
in St Pete, Florida grew a plant 25' tall in 8 months from a small pot.
It tolerated 1 night of 27 degrees in 1995 with only minor damage.
We've tried propagating
single node culm cuttings without success.
