20' height, Sun, 0 degrees F Minimum, Runner.

Culms are very straight, wood is of excellent quality.  Appearance similar to P. elegans except leaves are larger & whitish on the underside.  Wolfgang Eberts says it was introduced into France from Central & South China in 1846 but didn't make it to the U.S. until 1936.  He describes an 85 year-old plant in Baden-Baden as being 30' high with 1 1/2" diameter canes.  He also says the canes are widest not at the base, but 3' above the ground.  Botanist Claude Rifat has also expressed great admiration for the plant.  David Andrews in Maryland reports the plant is evergreen down to 9 degrees F.
Roger - "Doesn't do much for me, but some collectors, particularly Europeans will kill for it."
Hermine - "On the other hand, I would kill some collectors for a lot less."
