PHYLLOSTACHYS NUDA

 

        20' height, Full Sun,  Runner.   One of the hardiest bamboos.  And a fast-growing, important plant for commercial production of bamboo canes in China.    2" maximum diameter culms.  Loses its leaves in the coldest weather, culms are dark purple when they first come up out of the ground. 

        David Andrews reported minor leaf damage at -4 degrees & minor branch & rhizome damage at -8 degrees F. 

        Al Adelman in Westford, Mass reported that in winter of 2002 mature groves of Phyllostachys nuda  were killed to the ground.  The lowest temp was about -8F with abundant snow cover.

        Tim Meier in Wilmette, Illinois has a 5-year-old plant that is 9' tall & usually evergreen. 

        Pryse Duerfeldt in Negaunee, Michigan has a 3-year-old plant that gets -30 degrees F. every winter and says it looks like groundcover. 

        Carl Hensen has a plant in Aberdeen, Idaho which survives -36 degrees F. with no mulch, loses its leaves in winter but then comes back just fine. 

        Grove planted in 1918 in Washington, DC is alive & attractive.
