Mature culms are green with a black groove.  Originated from a Japanese island called "Awaji," where it is protected by law.  No one is permitted to collect it, only go, see, admire & worship it.
But someone broke the law - large clumps are growing without passport, import certificate, driver's license, birth certificate or green card in Seattle.
Grows over 30 feet tall, 1 1/2" diameter culms in Seattle, shorter & skinnier in hotter, dryer climates.
David Andrews in Maryland reports the plant is evergreen down to 3 degrees F.
Single node rhizome cuttings may be forced to produce foliage in spring with heat & humidity, but if the cuttings are then planted outdoors, 80% will fail.  A higher level of success may be achieved by growing them in the hot moist climate until they are independent plants, with roots.
