        David Andrews reports the plant evergreen down to 3 degrees & culms die to the ground at -4 degrees F.   Decorative 3" maximum diameter very erect light green culms with scattered purple & brown cloud-like spots & tiny 1" light green leaves.

 

        The entire Endangered Species household goes nuts over this one, Hermine for its appearance, Roger for it's height & shape, the birds who love its small dense vigorous leaves, & Little Big Man (one of the best friends we ever had), who loved to gnaw on its culms.   Used for decorative furniture, wall finishes, posts, rafters in Japan & presumably the rest of the world as well if anyone could grow enough to allow a little harvesting of the wood.
