PHYLLOSTACHYS MEYERI

18' height, Sun, 5 degrees F Minimum, Runner.
Similar to aurea but without the irregular swellings at the base. Vigorous plant with healthy green insect-proof leaves, a pleasure to watch it grow, especially good for low-maintenance or beginning gardeners. Strong culms are
especially good for poles of any sort, fishing, stakes, TV antennas, walrus toothpicks.
David Andrews reports plant is evergreen to 13 degrees & plant dies to the ground at 3 degrees F. but then regrows in the spring.  Many plants flowered & died in the U.S. during the period 1967-71, new clones have now been established from seed.  Edible.
        Native to China.
Tufts of new green foliage may be force from single node cuttings in spring with heat & humidity, but when the cuttings are planted outside only about 10% succeed. A higher level of success may be achieved by growing the leafy cuttings in a hot moist climate until they are
independent.
