        Introduced into the U.S. by the ABS from China via Germany in 1989.  In China it is grown as an ornamental plant & for the fresh shoots, which are eaten as delicacies.
        The ABS SoCal reference collection contained one plant as of 12/92.  A gallon pot with 3 2' culms was sold at the September 1991 N.W.ABS sale for $110.  A plant sold for $100 at the 10/95 ABS auction in Savannah.
