diameter culms.  David Andrews reports plant is evergreen to 3 degrees, major branch damage & minor rhizome damage at -8 degrees F.  Only mature plant in the U.S. is at the USDA in Savannah, Georgia.  Similar in appearance to P. flexuosa, but slightly larger & more vigorous.  Young culms covered with white powder.  Native to China, where it is one of the fastest-growing & important commercial producers of bamboo canes.  In China plants have produced 1,680 2 1/2" average diameter canes/acre/year.  Does well in cold areas of Europe.  Highly admired by Swiss biologist Claude Rifat.
