        Roots & rhizomes will live through a winter low of -20 degrees F. to grow again in the spring if heavily mulched.  David Andrews reports minor leaf damage at 3 degrees, all leaves dead at 0 degrees & major rhizome damage at -8 degrees F.  Fast growing, prolific edible shoots, one of the best for eating & an attractive pot or landscaping plant as well. The culms are not as hard & structurally strong as many others.
