DENDROCALAMUS LATIFLORUS MEI-NUNG

Plant in our nursery.       Venice        15 year-old plant by Bob Dimattia in Vista

50' height, Full Sun, 25 degrees F Minimum, Clumper.

One of the most, if not THE most attractive dendrocalamus. Should have good potential for landscaping in tropical areas of the U.S.  The large (up to 8" diameter) canes have a lovely pattern of green on green stripes which is unique and striking.  The only problem is that it is rare.  Also, a bit cold sensitive.  The plants in Florida in the 1989 100-year low of 23 degrees suffered having 50% of their leaves burned.  Jean Harrington in St Pete Fl had a 1 year-old plant 25' tall that had 75% of its leaves damaged but then regrew them after being hit with 27 degrees for one night in 1955.  It grew well for Gary Stinson in Menifee, California which regularly gets below freezing in winter.

One plant in a 35 gallon pot sold at the spring '91 SCABS sale for $475.  Three 15 gallon 5' high culm cuttings were offered at the fall '91 SCABS sale for $350 each but were not purchased. Two 15 gallon pots were offered at the '92 SCABS show for $150 each & 12 collectors tried to buy them.  3-4 5 gallon pots were offered at the 1994 SCABS sale for $100 each but were passed up.
