Arundinaria marmorea, Arundinaria kokantsik, Arundinaria matsumurae, Marble Bamboo, Kan chiku.

Small decorative plant introduced to the U.S. from Japan in 1889.  Thin marbled culm-sheaths which fall off & reveal cream-purple, black, silvery white culms tipped & striped with pink & a dense growth of small leaves which are light green in sun & emerald green in shade. Old clumps occasionally flower with no affect on the health of the plant.  Grows well & looks good in pots.

Minimum temperature proven in the severe winter of 1984-85 in Europe. David Andrews in Maryland reports minor rhizome damage at 9 degrees F.  Has not done well in Southern Florida.  A bushy beauty, not the least bit open but dense.  Oh! for several million tubs of this!
