October

Bamboo starts looking good.  And everybody who has been planning on planting bamboo for years now suddenly decides their new plantings must be done NOW.  Bambusa oldhamii begins to sell out and become hard to find in nurseries.  Phyllostachys start putting out new shoots when night temperatures stay above 40 degrees - cool mountainous areas may not start for several months until night temperatures warm up.  Start taking cane cuttings of Bambusas and Dendrocalamus if no heated greenhouse has been available.  Increase the amount of water on plants you want to grow spectacularly in the next few months.  Good month to divide and clean old and small canes out of Bambusas, Dendrocalamus and Otateas.  White flies and aphids may attack the Phyllostachys and Semiarundinarias - to kill them spray the plants with a dilute mixture of dishing washing liquid and water.  The plants would be happy if you add some soluble fertilizer to the mix as well.
