September
This is the worst month of the year for the appearance of bamboo. The plants, especially ones growing in containers and in dry soil, seem to pull their energy out of their leaf system in order to get ready for the push of energy next month into the new foliage. If you want healthy, lush dark green bamboo foliage - install a nonstop drip system that goes constantly day and night non-stop drip, drip, drip. Turn the system on in spring and don't turn it off until winter - or better yet, never turn it off.
Sasaellas, Indocalamus and Sasas start putting out new shoots.
Phyllostachys are still dormant. All canes should be cut to the ground, except for the large attractive ones. This will make room for the larger, more beautiful canes that will appear in a month or so and is much easier than trying to trim out between the soft new canes a few months from now. Good month to divide and take Phyllostachys rhizome cuttings.
If your Phyllostachys develops a black sooty glaze on the leaves blast them clean with a hose, or spray them with dishwashing fluid first and then a blast of water, or apply a systemic poison to the soil.
